The Christian community of Cadore was presumably founded as early as the 4th century by the Aquileian missionaries.
An ancient church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, stood on the nearby Montericco. The parish church dedicated to the Madonna has been documented since the 12th century.
It is the mother of all the parishes in Cadore: until the 14th century the priests of the Pieve rectory went to officiate in the most distant villages and the people of the whole Cadore region came to Pieve for the most important rites.
The present building, designed by Domenico Schiavi of Tolmezzo (18th century), preserves works of art and antique furnishings: paintings by "our" Titian, Francesco, Cesare, Marco and Orazio Vecellio; then by Bassano, Dolci, Catena, Palma il Giovane, Cattarino Veneziano, Diziani; fragments of the 15th century altar with doors; silverware; vestments including a 15th century cope of embroidered velvet.
