The Lamon Civic Archaeological Museum collects the findings of the archaeological excavations of the Roman necropolis of San Donato that began in the late eighteenth century and have not yet been completed.
The excavations have brought to light more than 80 burials, unique in their kind, all buried in the ground in oval-shaped pits. The deceased are seated huddled with their backs leaning against the wall of the tomb and their heads facing east, according to a typical Bronze Age custom (from about 3500 B.C. to 1200 B.C. approximately) and therefore very different from the one normally used in this Roman period.
The funeral kits of the Necropolis of San Donato on display in the Museum, are made up of items of clothing, ornament and everyday use and almost always also one or more coins. In the female tombs the ornaments in bronze, silver and glass are numerous and indicate the social status of the deceased. Famous are the silver earrings called "a B" that for their particular shape have been chosen as a symbol of the Museum. Simpler the men’s funeral kit with the famous switchblade knives used in everyday work.
In 2001 was found a very particular burial: an ox of two years, probably sacrificed for some ritual and later buried next to the human sepolture. It was buried in the same era las the human with all the respect. Also to notice the almost total absence of young people, only two out of eighty burials found until now, and the particular physical features of these ancient romans particularly strong and robust.
