The Murazzi are a gigantic work, worthy of Roman greatness.
They were begun towards the end of 1500 and finished in 1817. In the period of hunger of 1782 the Sartori family made the villagers of Longarone and other villages work, granting them a daily measure of flour.
They are presented as a series of big steps; they consist of five shelves supported by dry walls dinotevole thickness to large blocks of stone perfectly squared; they have a height of 10/12 meters and a length of 100 meters.
The main access can be reached by going up via Murazzi, once connected to the elegant staircase of the gardens of palazzo Sartori.
The great ancient murazzi were built to obtain land to cultivate and to protect the houses from falling rocks. The lower wall was partially destroyed by the Vajont wave.
Along the north side rise the oldest houses of Longarone, dating back to 1300; above the highest terrace rises the kindergarten, which occupies an old farmhouse and a new building.
