At the beginning of the last century, the Kingdom of Italy strengthened the Cadore area militarily in order to protect itself from a possible Austrian advance. To this end, it created the so-called Cadore-Maè Fortress, which included the Monte Rite complex, which was not however involved in the Great War.
In 1917, after the defeat of Caporetto, the army abandoned this post. In the summer of 1944, the remains of the fortification served as a refuge for the partisans of Cadore.
In 1997 Reinhold Messner identified the Rite as the ideal location for his "Museum in the Clouds"; thus began the renovation work that already in 2002 allowed the inauguration of the Museum and the shelter.
The latter offers hikers comfortable rooms (some with private bathroom) and home cooking with typical dishes.
