Located in a fort from the Great War and dedicated to the element of 'rock', the museum tells the story of exploration and mountaineering in the Dolomites.
In the gallery in the nave, paintings and works from Reinhold Messner's collection representing the Dolomites, from Romanticism to contemporary art, are on display.
Artistic views magically alternate with panoramic glimpses of the surrounding peaks from the museum windows: Mount Schiara, Mount Agnèr, Cimon della Pala, Mount Civetta, Marmolada, Mount Pelmo, Tofana di Rozes, Sorapis, Antelao and Marmolada.
"The museum in the clouds" also preserves some evidence of the origin of Dolomite rock: fossils of shells from 250 million years ago, fossils of palm ferns 240 million years ago and other extraordinary finds, as a reminder of what were coral reefs in a tropical sea.
