The skeleton of a hunter dating back to about 7,500 years ago was found in Mondevàl De Sora in 1987, at an elevation of 2,150 metres above sea level, sheltered by a large boulder, along with the grave goods of a wealthy person.
It will take you roughly one hour to reach this Mesolithic burial site from the Giau Pass. Take CAI Trail No. 436 of the Dolomites’ Alta Via No. 1 and stay on it until you reach Col Piombin Pass. Descend into the northern valley of Cernera and ascend to Forcella Giau.
From the fork, looking south, you will have the beautiful plateau of Mondeval before you. To reach the large boulder where the burial place of the Mondeval Man was found, continue downhill to Forcella Ambrizzola.
To complete your itinerary, take a tour of the Vittorino Cazzetta Museum, in Selva di Cadore, where all the artefacts are kept.
