Mindful in the mountains

Here are some tips on how to enjoy an unforgettable – and mindful – experience in the Belluno Dolomites.

“Power is nothing without control”.

Sound familiar? Well, it applies to the mountains too, which offer so many opportunities for experiences, walks, excursions, outdoor sports and emotions… but we must respect the mountains and act safely and responsibly.

Safety first. Which means acknowledging where you are and what you can and can’t do. In the mountains there are activities that everyone can do, activities that only some can and activities that are discouraged or best avoided. So it’s important to be mindful of your degree of experience, preparation and fitness, as well as your local knowledge.

For an experience of a lifetime in the Belluno Dolomites, you can benefit from the experience and expertise of those who live and work there. The ‘Club Alpino Italiano’ (CAI), ‘Soccorso Alpino Dolomiti Bellunesi’ mountain rescue, mountain guides, UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, Dolomiti Bellunesi DMO Foundation, Refuge Managers Association, ULSS 1 Dolomiti local hospital trust and the Province of Belluno have joined forces to create the “Mindful in the mountains” project. A handbook with advice for everyone who visits our mountains and answers to your frequently asked questions.

For a truly genuine, spectacular and unforgettable experience, read our FAQs and their invaluable advice. And remember: safety really can make the difference.

The 11 golden rules

  1. Always plan your excursion beforehand
  2. Check the weather and/or avalanche forecast
  3. Never go alone and always tell someone where you’re going
  4. Set out early in the morning
  5. Dress in layers and wear suitable footwear
  6. Make sure your backpack is organised and you have everything you need
  7. Every activity has its own specific equipment
  8. Protect yourself from the sun (cream, hat and sunglasses)
  9. When exploring remote snowy terrain in the winter, always carry an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe
  10. Call 118 in an emergency
  11. Be prepared to cancel your hike if the conditions are not suitable
