The Croce d’Aune Pass, as well as being famous for the beauty of the places it passes through, is also renowned for one episode of the Giro d’Italia that changed cycling history. It was here that in 1924, young Tullio Campagnolo, founder of a famous bicycle parts manufacturing company, transformed a piece of bad luck into a stroke of genius.
The climb up the Croce d’Aune was going well when, owing to frozen hands, he found himself unable to disassemble and reassemble the wheel. This, together with a passion for innovation, gave him the brilliant idea in later years to invent the quick release mechanism.
